Whatās the Role of a Sorority Big?
Sorority Bigs are initiated sorority members, typically juniors or seniors.
Each Big is assigned a new member to help them get settled as a college student and mentor them on how to embrace sorority life.
A couple of weeks into the school year, most sororities will host a “Big Little Week,” which is when Reveal Night takes place.
During the week, all the new members (the Littles) receive their gift baskets via an anonymous proxy and try to guess who theyāll be paired up with.
Showering them with gifts is one of the most exciting times and the best part of welcoming them into the sisterhood and making them feel theyāre part of the sorority.
So, when planning your Littleās gift basket, you have to think long and hard about which items best suit her personality and personal preferences.
Also, donāt forget to add a few things that will help define the beautiful sisterhood the two of you will share forever.

What to Put in a Big Little Basket
So this is one of the great things about making your little’s basket...you can be sooo creative!
Depending on who your Little is and what she likes, you have free range to make her basket as you see fit.
There may be some requirements that you have to put in the basket based on your sorority.
I’ve seen sororities require you to include things like sorority swag (letters, shirts, jewelry, pins), only include things in the sorority’s colors, or even little notes from the Big or Alumnae.
Having these requirements is essential, especially for making sure every member is receiving the same thing and having a similar experience.
And in the case of clothing, so everyone can wear the same thing! This really comes in handy if you’re having an event (like your sorority formal) or taking your chapter pictures.
It also helps to increase the amount of swag every sister has!Ā

As for what to put in a big little basket, the general rule is that the items should be things that your sorority Little will be excited about at the reveal.
Remember this reveal is a HUGE deal and a super important moment, especially for a new member in the sorority.
You want this to be memorable for them and for you as an older member.
š”Here’s a Gem: Think of it like this, you want to make your little sister feel special and also to try and pique her curiosity as to who her sorority Big will be.
How to Make Your Sorority Littleās Basket
How you make your basket for your little will depend on a few things like your sorority, specific chapter, and rules for the reveal.
Your New Member Educator should provide some guidelines and more details to help you make your basketĀ (including what should be included).
Some rules could be things like a limit on how many items you can put in the basket, how much you can spend on each item, or when you can give your basket to your Little.
A lot of these rules are in place to make sure all the Littles are being treated equally no matter who their Big is.
If you don’t know this before making your basket, talk to your New Member Educator before you start buying things!
Another important thing for making your basket is learning how your chapter does your Big/Little Reveal!
Some chapters are really lowkey, just doing something small on one night and others have a whole Big/Little Reveal Week filled with tons of fun events leading up to the Reveal Night.Ā
(If you go to a school with large Greek life, you already know what the deal is š)
The biggest thing for making your sorority Little’s basket is making sure you know the requirements like:
- Specific events and assignments for reveal
- Theme for the baskets (if there is one)
- What can be included and what cannot be included
- If you can freestyle! (i.e. include a note, something that gives hints about you, etc.)
If you need any help, don’t forget to ask your sisters!
Example of How To Make A Big/Little Basket
If you need more inspiration, here’s an example of how to make and what to put in a big little basket:
Think of your basket in terms of 3 areas:
- Thoughtfulness for your little
- Show your sorority pride
- Strengthen your bond and bring you and your little closer
Then add things that touch each of these different areas! I’ve expanded on those more to get you some great ideas:
Thoughtfulness For Your Little
You can do things like add your Little’s favorite snacks, foods, quotes, or a gift card to her favorite store!
š„°Pro Tip: Find out your little’s favorite color and use it in the basket!
Show Your Sorority Pride
You can fill your basket with things like your sorority’s t-shirts, accessories, and canvases or paddles with your sororityās letters printed on them. (They will love this!)
Here’s a box of pearls I received when I joined my sorority (pearls are our thing!)

Strengthen Your Bond
You can add things that you both share in common like your favorite movies, major, hobbies, experiences, etc.
š”Here’s A Gem: If your little is a total homebody and loves self-care, you can do a “spa” basket filled with things like body lotions, face masks,a robe or blanket, and fuzzy socks in your sorority’s colors of course!
How to Figure Out What Your Little Likes
Now, I bet youāre probably wondering “How the heck am I going to know what her favorite snack or coffee order is for her sorority basket?”
Well, that, my friend, is part of what being a sorority Big is all about! You have to find ways to figure out the basic things about your sorority Little, like her favorite things.
I suggest you do some social media investigating and get a feel for what she likes and is into or ask some of her friends if you can. It will be sooo much easier to make a fun basket if you know those things!
Basically, anything that will help spark your inspiration and help you brainstorm will be a great way to help you pick out some amazing gifts for her!
