The Only Dorm Cleaning Supplies You Actually Need (And Nothing Else)
I’ve seen a lot of dorm rooms. The good, the bad, and…the stinky. And I can tell you without a doubt, the ones that get out of hand fast are the ones where nobody came prepared with the right cleaning supplies.
You don’t need a lot to keep your room clean. You just need the right stuff.
I’ve rounded up everything you actually need so you can handle it in one Target or Amazon run and not think about it again.

Room Cleaning Supplies
Disinfecting Wipes
If you take nothing else from this list, you have got to have a few packs of these in your dorm room. These are a non-negotiable! They’re easy to use, work on everything, and you will go through them faster than you think. Get a bundle because you will use these all the time.
All Purpose Cleaner
Use this when the wipes aren’t enough. Spray this on your desk, dresser, mini fridge, counters…basically anything that needs a real wipe down. One bottle should last you most of the semester.
Windex Window Cleaner
Nothing is worse than going to take a picture and your mirror is dirty. Windex keeps them crystal clear and streak free.
Swiffer Sweeper 2-in-1 Mop
Most dorms have hard floors that collect dust and other nasty crumbs easily, so you want to sweep/mop often (I suggest at least 2 times a week). The Swiffer handles both sweeping and mopping, so you don’t need two separate things. Use a dry cloth to sweep, wet cloth to mop, and you’re done.
Cordless Vacuum
For the crumbs on your bed, the dust in your corners, and everything the Swiffer misses. This one converts from a full vacuum to a handheld so it works on your floors, your bed, your furniture, and those hard to reach corners. Powerful, quiet, rechargeable, and slim enough to tuck away without taking up any real space in your room.
Trash Can with Lid
I know many students who use this trash can and it works great. It doesn’t take up too much space and the “small can” trash bags fit perfectly. I would say it could hold about a week’s worth of trash without being too full and the lid keeps the room odor free.
Trash Bags
These bags fit perfectly in the trash can I mentioned above. I suggest getting scented bags to keep the trash can fresh even when there’s smelly food needed to be taken out. These also have a drawstring closure, so it’s easier to tie them up and take out the trash.
If you are sensitive to smells, go with the unscented version of these bags since the smell can be pretty powerful.
Magic Eraser
When you move out you’ll have to take down all your wall art and clean up any scuff marks or you’ll get charged for them. Start cleaning marks as they happen now. Don’t wait until your move-out day because it’ll be A LOT more work.
Reusable Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
Reusable and work on everything (wiping down surfaces, cleaning spills, dusting.) Way better than burning through paper towels for every little thing.
Paper Towels
Paper towels are a dorm room non-negotiable. Get a bundle pack so you always have some on hand and don’t cheap out on these. A good thick roll lasts way longer than a thin cheap one.
Get a big bottle and keep it on your desk. You’ll use it all the time.
Portable Cleaning Caddy
Keep all your supplies in one place so you can grab everything at once when it’s time to clean. It sounds simple but when your room needs cleaning the last thing you want to do is hunt down your Windex from whatever corner it ended up in.
Air Purifier
Dorm air isn’t the cleanest. Depending on your dorm, the building might be old and dusty, and there are a ton of other people breathing and sharing the same air.
A small quiet air purifier makes your room feel noticeably fresher. If you have any kind of allergies, asthma, or breathing problems, I highly suggest you get one for your dorm room.
Kitchen Cleaning Supplies
Only grab these if your dorm has a kitchen or kitchenette area that you’ll need to clean.
Dawn Powerwash
The easiest way to clean dishes in a small dorm kitchen. Just spray, wipe, rinse.
The best sponge for dorm life. Soft side for everyday dishes, scrubby side for stuck-on food. Multi-surface so you can use them on your counters and surfaces too. They last longer than regular sponges and don’t hold onto that gross sponge smell. Get a multipack.
Rubber Gloves
Protect your hands when washing dishes or cleaning. Especially useful if you just got a manicure and don’t want to ruin it.
Bathroom Cleaning Supplies
Only grab these if you have a private or semi-private bathroom that you have to clean.
Clorox ToiletWand
If you have your own bathroom you have to keep the toilet clean. The ToiletWand is the easiest way to do it. Just attach the disposable sponge, scrub, throw it away. No gross toilet brush sitting in your bathroom collecting bacteria.
Bathroom Cleaner
Spray on your sink, shower, and surfaces, let it sit for a minute, wipe down. Gets rid of soap scum and leaves your bathroom smelling clean.
Laundry Supplies
Laundry Detergent
You will need laundry detergent. I suggest a regular liquid detergent works, since it works in every machine. Get a large size so it lasts a while and you’re not making a Target run every few weeks.
💎Here’s a Gem: Tide Pods are super convenient but check with your dorm first before buying them. Some washing machines don’t take pods and you don’t want to waste your money, if you can’t use them.
Dryer Sheets
To keep your clothes soft and smelling good. Toss one in with every load.

Trust me, get a multipack of these and put them everywhere. It instantly removes any stain in minutes. As a busy, on-the-go college student, you need one of these when you accidently spill something on yourself.
Rolling Laundry Hamper
You need something to store your dirty clothes and carry them to the laundry room. A rolling hamper gives you both. It sits in your room, holds everything, and you just roll it down the hall on laundry day.
