The Guy Dorm Room Essentials List That’s Actually for Guys

I’ve been around college move-in day more times than I can count.

Between my undergraduate orientation work, a summer in college housing, and a yearlong internship in RA training, I’ve watched hundreds of guys roll in with whatever their mom threw in the car and figure out what they forgot once they got there.

And I can tell you…the list they were working from was not built for them.

Most dorm content online is for girls. The guy version is usually just the same list with different colors and fewer throw pillows.

This one is actually for guys.

I pulled together everything you actually need. From the basics everyone knows to the stuff guys consistently show up without.

Whether you’re shopping for yourself, your son, or someone you love who is absolutely not making a list on his own, this is the one.

Bedding

Dorm beds are Twin XL, not regular Twin. That one detail trips up more guys than anything else on move-in day. Remember, everything in this section should say Twin XL on the label before you add it to your cart.

1. Sheets – Twin XL

Get at least two sets. You will absolutely go longer between washes than you’re planning to (we all do, no judgment). 300 thread count minimum or you’ll feel every spring in that mattress through the fabric.

2. Comforter – Twin XL

Going somewhere cold? Get a thick one. Going somewhere warm? A lighter quilt is all you need and takes up half the space in your car. Either way, pick something that goes with your room or your mom will pick it for you.

3. Mattress Topper – Twin XL

Dorm mattresses are genuinely terrible. Like, suspiciously bad. A topper is the difference between actually sleeping and spending freshman year exhausted for no reason you can explain.

4. Pillows

You need at least two. Soft, firm, or memory foam. Go to Target and actually feel them before you buy. Takes five minutes and you’ll thank yourself every single night.

5. Bed Risers

Lifts your bed high enough to store bins, suitcases, and everything else you have absolutely nowhere to put. Wait until you see your actual bed setup before ordering these though — lofted beds don’t need them.

6. Throw Blanket

Not technically essential but every single guy ends up wanting one. Movie nights, late night study sessions, every night your roommate decides 65 degrees is a perfectly reasonable temperature. Just get one.

Bathroom

Shared bathrooms are one of those things nobody really prepares you for. You’re not in your house anymore… you’re actually sharing a shower with an entire floor of people you just met.

These are the things that make that significantly less terrible.

7. Shower Shoes

Non-negotiable. Number one item on this entire list. Communal showers have seen things. Just wear the shoes.

8. Shower Caddy

You need something to carry your stuff to the bathroom and back every single time you shower. A caddy keeps it all in one place so you’re not doing the awkward juggle of shampoo, soap, and a towel down the hallway at 7am.

9. Bath Towels and Washcloths

Bring at least three sets. More than you think you need. Laundry day has a way of sneaking up on you and you do not want to be improvising with a t-shirt.

10. Bath Robe

Depending on your dorm layout the shower might be down the hall from your room. A robe makes that walk significantly less awkward. Trust me on this one.

11. Bath Mat

For drying off without touching the bare floor the second you step out. If you have a private or suite-style bathroom, get it. Small thing, makes a big difference.

Have a communal bathroom situation? Skip it, the dorm will usually have something for your feet.

12. Shower Curtain

Only if you’re in a suite style or apartment dorm. Check your specific dorm setup before buying. A lot of residence halls already have them, and your roommate might be bringing one anyway.

Desk and School Supplies

No matter how much time you plan to spend at the library, you will end up doing work in your room. A lot of it. These are the things that make your desk actually functional.

13. Laptop

The most important thing on this list. What you need depends on your major. If you’re doing papers and research a basic laptop is fine. If you’re doing video editing, design, or engineering work, do your research before you buy.

💎Here’s a Gem: A lot of schools have deals with Microsoft or Apple for discounted student pricing. Check your school’s bookstore before you buy anywhere else.

14. Headphones

You need a pair you can wear every day. For the library, for class, for the mornings your roommate wants to talk and you do not. Get ones that fold down for easy storage or go for a classic set of Airpods.

15. Flash Drive

Please I beg you to backup your work. Computers crash at the worst possible times and “my laptop died the night before” is not the excuse your professor is going to feel sorry about.

💎Here’s a Gem: A lot of schools hand out free flash drives at orientation. Grab one this summer before you buy it.

16. Ethernet Cable

Campus wifi can be notoriously unreliable. An ethernet cable gives you a direct connection for the nights you actually need the internet to work.

17. Binders and Notebooks

If you still like physical notes and haven’t fully converted to online notetaking, these are a must. Multiple subject notebooks work great if you don’t want to deal with binders. Bring a mix until you figure out what works for your classes.

18. Pens and Pencils

Buy in bulk. You will lose them constantly and never figure out where they went.

19. Planner

College has more moving pieces than high school and none of them will remind you they’re coming. A planner keeps you from finding out about a due date the night before it’s due.

20. Book Bag

You’re walking everywhere on campus so get something that can actually hold your stuff comfortably. A lot of students swear by the North Face Recon, built like a tank and should last you all four years, if not more.

Organization and Laundry

Dorm rooms are small. Like, smaller than you’re picturing right now. The guys who stay organized aren’t naturally tidier…they just have the right organization systems in place.

21. Hanging Closet Organizer

Adds a second row of hanging space in your closet so you can actually fit everything without leaving half your clothes in a pile on the floor.

22. Storage Organizer

Dorm rooms have almost no storage built in. This goes next to your desk or in your closet and gives you an actual place to put everything that doesn’t have a home (like snacks, chargers, school supplies). Whatever you’re always digging through a pile to find.

23. Shoe Rack

If you’re a sneaker guy this is non-negotiable. Keeps your collection off the floor and actually visible so you’re not digging through a pile every morning.

24. Rolling Laundry Basket

You will be hauling your laundry down a hallway and possibly into an elevator. A rolling basket means you’re not doing that with your arms full and your back hurting.

💎Here’s a Gem: If you’re dorm doesn’t have an elevator, go with a laundry basket with straps. That way you can carry it like a backpack and have your hands free.

25. Laundry Detergent

Before you buy a deluxe pack of tide pods, check with your dorm if you can use pods in the washing machines. Some dorms only allow liquid or powder detergent and you don’t want to be stuck with a box you can’t use.

26. Dryer Sheets

Small, cheap, and your clothes will actually smell like something good came out of that dorm dryer.

27. Iron

You will need this exactly once before a presentation or interview and be extremely glad you have it. Go for the inexpensive one. Between you and your roommate, one of you needs to have it.

28. Ironing Board

Get one made for dorm rooms specifically. They’re smaller, cheaper, and won’t take up half your floor space.

29. Clothes Hangers

Fabric hangers over plastic. Your clothes stay put, don’t stretch out, and don’t slide off the rack every time you open the closet.

Electronics

Before you buy anything in this section, check your residence hall guidelines. Some dorms have restrictions on certain appliances. Takes two minutes and saves you from having to haul that air fryer back to Walmart on the campus bus.

30. Surge Protector

Your dorm room will not have enough outlets. They will also be in weird places. A long surge protector fixes both problems at once. Get one with USB ports so you’re not hunting for a charging block every night.

31. TV

Talk to your roommate before buying one. You only need one between you and it’s a great thing to split. A 32 inch is a great for a regular sized dorm room. I suggest a smart tv, so you can stream your favorite platforms without buying anything extra.

💎 Here’s a Gem: Some colleges provide a TV in the room, especially in apartment style dorms. Check before you buy.

32. Streaming Stick

If you don’t get a smart tv with streaming built in… you need a way to watch things on it. A Roku stick is easy, portable, and you can take it anywhere you go.

33. Gaming System

Not essential but absolutely worth it if gaming is your thing. It also makes you the most popular room on the floor which is not a bad way to make friends freshman year.

34. Fan

Dorms get HOT, especially in August and September before the weather breaks. If your dorm doesn’t have AC a good fan is not optional, it’s survival.

35. Cordless Vacuum

A dorm room gets dirty faster than you’d expect and a full size vacuum is way more than you need. A cordless standing vacuum is compact, easy to store, and ready to go in seconds.

36. Desk Lamp

Fluorescent dorm lighting is genuinely awful. A small desk lamp makes your room feel like a place a human being lives instead of a waiting room.

37. Extra Long Phone Chargers

Buy a multipack. Keep one at your desk, one by your bed, one in your bag. You will never have to make the choice between comfort and battery life again.

38. Portable Speaker

You want to be the person who has a speaker. Trust. Use it for getting ready, hanging out, pregaming, or just making your room feel less like a cell block. Throw it in your bag and it goes everywhere with you.

Kitchen

You probably don’t have a full kitchen freshman year but you still need to eat, make coffee, and store things that don’t belong in a communal fridge with forty other people’s mystery containers. These are the basics.

39. Mini Fridge

The most important appliance in your room. Drinks, leftovers, coffee creamer, snacks at 2am…you will use this every single day. Coordinate with your roommate before buying or renting, you only need one between you and it’s a great thing to split the cost on.

40. Coffee Maker

If you drink coffee, having one in your room is a game changer. An 8am class hits completely different when you’ve already had coffee before you leave. A Keurig or Nespresso works perfectly for a dorm setup.

41. Reusable Coffee Mug

Keeps your coffee hot for hours and a lot of campus cafes give you a discount for bringing your own. Pays for itself faster than you’d think.

42. Simple Utensil Set

I know you’re tempted to just get a set of plastic utensils from the dollar tree, but having a reusable set is great to have in your room. You’ll be eating in your room more than you’re planning to.

43. Microwavable Plates, Bowls, and Cups

Light, cheap, microwave safe, and easy to clean. Get a small set and you’re covered for everything from late night ramen to actual meals.

44. Reusable Water Bottle

Most campus buildings have water fountains and bottle filling stations. A good reusable bottle saves you money and means you’re actually staying hydrated instead of forgetting to drink water for entire days like a person who has never had a body before.

45. Water Filter Pitcher

If your campus tap water is questionable (and a lot of them are) a small pitcher that fits in your mini fridge fixes that problem completely.

Cleaning

46. Cleaning Wipes

The fastest way to keep your room from clean. A quick wipe down of your desk, doorknob, and surfaces takes thirty seconds and people will actually want to come in your room.

47. Broom and Dustpan

A broom is a non-negotiable. If you don’t get a vacuum, at least get a broom, I BEG!

48. Paper Towels

Have a few rolls in your room for spills, to use as napkins, etc. These are always good to keep a stock of, so you don’t run out and have to use your body towel to clean up a mess.

49. Trash Can and Trash Bags

Get a small one that fits next to your desk or bed. and make sure it has a lid. you dont want any smell creeping up. Don’t forget to get trash bags too…or just use old grocery store bags.

50. Air Freshener Plug-In

Two guys in a small room. You need this. No further explanation required.

Miscellaneous

These are the things that don’t fit neatly into a category but you will absolutely wish you had when you need them.

51. Batteries

Get a pack of AA and AAA before you get there. Something will need them and you will not want to make a Target run for batteries at 11pm on a Tuesday.

52. Ear Plugs

Residence halls are loud. Your roommate might snore. The people next door might have very different ideas about what time night ends. Ear plugs are cheap insurance for your sleep.

53. Safe

For your important documents, cash, and anything else crucial that you need to keep close. Get a small fireproof one that fits in your closet or under your desk.

54. Mini Toolbox

Something will need to be assembled, tightened, or fixed at some point. Having a basic toolkit means you’re the guy who can handle it instead of the guy asking the RA for a screwdriver.

55. Flashlight

Power goes out. It happens. Having one that isn’t your phone means your phone stays charged when you actually need it.

56. First Aid Kit

Always keep a first aid kit. Cuts, burns, headaches, mystery injuries from moving furniture. A basic kit covers all of it and takes up almost no space. If you’re bringing a car to campus, get one for there too.

Decor

Dorm rooms are small and kind of ugly out of the box. You don’t have to go all out but a few things make it feel like your space instead of a room you’re temporarily surviving in.

57. Rug

Dorm floors are cold, hard, and not something you want to step onto first thing in the morning. A rug makes the whole room feel warmer and more put together with almost no effort.

58. Dorm Flags

The easiest way to add personality to your walls without putting a hole in anything. Come in every style imaginable and they’re affordable enough to switch out when you get tired of them.

59. Posters

Same idea as flags. Your walls don’t have to be blank. Pick a few things that actually reflect your personality and your room stops feeling like a waiting room.

60. LED Strip Lights

LED strips are one of the most popular dorm additions for guys right now and they’re cheap. They go behind your desk, under your bed, behind your TV. Changes the whole vibe of the room with about ten minutes of setup.
