Going to college comes with many questions and honestly not a whole lot of answers. For many students, college is one big experiment where you figure things out as you go
(I was a very go-with-the-flow person in college)
Now I know everyone doesn’t do well with just going with the flow, especially if you’re a self-identified type A person.
You have questions and you want answers!
That is one of the reasons I created this blog, to help you answer those pesky little questions that you need the answers to (like if you can have an air fryer in your dorm room).
If you love hats and it’s a part of your personal style, of course you’d want to wear them in college, but can you? Is it allowed?
I’ll tell you all you need to know about wearing hats in college down below!
This post is all about can you wear hats in college!
Can you Wear Hats in College?
The answer to can you wear hats in college is it depends on your individual college policies. Most public colleges and community colleges do not have a dress code and therefore you are typically allowed to wear hats in college and other academic settings on campus. For private schools, there may be a specific dress code for academic settings that should be clearly outlined in the student’s code of conduct or a similar document of student expectations.
So as you can see, the short answer really is, it depends on the college you’re attending.
Let’s start off by saying college is not like high school, middle school, or any secondary schools you’re used to.
The college school environment is composed of adults that are treated as adults and expected to act like adults within the educational institution.
Therefore, the wearing of hats in an academic setting isn’t a big deal at all!
(just wait to you see what some people actually wear to class, then you’ll understand)

Do Colleges have Dress Codes?
Public Colleges
In most colleges, there isn’t a dress code.
Generally, if you go to public schools or a community college, you won’t find anything about a dress code.
College students at these schools tend to dress casually.
Just because there isn’t a dress code, doesn’t mean that there isn’t an expectation of what you wear.
Some schools do have a set of expectations or “cultural norms” that all students are expected to abide by.
For example, it is commonly known if you’re a man in the South to remove your hat when entering buildings.
This more traditional cultural norm carries over into traditional southern schools, so you might be expected to conform to this hat rule as well.
Private Colleges
If you attend private schools like religious colleges or ivy league schools, there may be a dress code you’ll need to abide by (but not usually).
There may be policies for when and where you can wear certain things like college hats, t-shirts, ripped jeans, etc.
Usually, dress codes restrict mostly what types of clothes students can wear in the academic setting like in a lecture hall, school building, or club activities
If you’re just hanging around on campus, it’s probably okay to wear what you want, but definitely review the dress code before just putting on anything and going out.
To find out more about possible dress codes on your campus, check out your school’s student code of conduct or any similar document for student expectations.
These should outline all expectations of students from the school’s perspective.
[mailerlite_form form_id=1]Is it Rude to Wear Hats in College?
The answer to this question will largely depend on what school you go to, the cultural norms, and the expectations of students.
(But if you want my opinion, heck no! I had so many bad hair days in college, my choice was either to wear a baseball hat or not go to class. This one is still my go-to for messy hair.)
In some schools, it could be in bad taste to wear hats indoors (a sign of disrespect for the teacher) and it’s more common only to wear them outside.
(this does not include wearing any type of head covering or garments for religious reasons)
For other colleges, hats are no big deal!
Students throw them on when they have a bad haircut or when it’s cold and they need a beanie to keep their ears warm.
Honestly, the thoughts on this are varied throughout parts of the United States, so it’s a good idea to figure out your campus norms before deciding if you want to wear them or not!
Here are some other factors that come into play:
Type of Hat
The type of hat definitely matters when you are thinking about wearing a hat in college.
Common hats like baseball caps and fitted caps are a normal part of casual dress that no one would bat an eye at, whereas a big hat (thinking like a sun hat) would be a distraction.
(Just imagine if you were in class and you tried to see the screen behind someone wearing a sun hat… you’d probably be annoyed!)
Specific Class Requirements
College professors have the power to decide what rules and expectations are for students in their classes.
If you’re wearing a distracting hat or you’re in a medical school lab with specific safety requirements, they do have the jurisdiction to ask you to remove it.
Any expectations should be listed in your course syllabus so make sure you review that document to find out what you can and cannot wear.
Time of Year
Students are more likely to bring out their hats during the winter months.
With the colder weather, you could throw on a soft cap (like a slouchy hat or a beanie) to keep you warm and look stylish.
(if you go to school anywhere it gets cold, you’ll want some of these beanies!)
Since you’re using the hat for warmth and protection, there’s a more common justification for you to wear a hat.
Campus Activities
If there’s a big game coming up and you want to throw on a hat to support your favorite college team or sports teams, this is usually okay!
Colleges love school spirit and if you wearing a hat is how you show your school pride, then go for it!
Gender Bias
There is also an element of gender bias and cultural norms with wearing hats as well.
Depending on the school’s location and culture, there may be different expectations of men and women when it comes to wearing hats.
This could factor in if it’s rude to wear a hat, so pay attention to the campus culture to learn these norms.
Where Can I Wear Hats in College?
For schools without a dress code, you can wear hats anywhere on campus!
This includes academic buildings and student-centered buildings on campus.
Here’s a general list of where you can wear hats in college:
- Academic buildings (including lecture halls, classrooms, media labs, etc.)
- Dining halls and facilities
- Dorm rooms and campus housing
- Student activities spaces (like a campus center or event space)
- Libraries
- Gyms
- Outdoor spaces (like when participating in physical activities and sports)
Tips for Wearing Hats in College
If you’re going to college for the first time, it can be hard to figure out if you can wear hats in college.
To help you, here are 3 tips for wearing hats in college.
1. Learn Your Campus Culture
Every college campus has a different culture that makes up its cultural norms and values.
Take some time during your first few weeks to observe and figure out these norms and values to really get a sense of what’s okay and what’s not.
(and if there’s a specific dress code or an “unspoken” dress code)
You’ll learn about this during orientation (and maybe you’ll get a free college hat or shirt)!
Don’t hesitate to also ask questions with your resources around you too (like an RA).
Most important is to:
- Observe your campus norms and values
- Read and understand the student code of conduct (like if there’s a dress code)
- Talk with older students to get the inside scoop
To be on the safe side, don’t wear a hat on your first day of class.
Take this time to pay attention to what other people are wearing so you can decide for yourself if you would feel comfortable wearing a hat.
2. Wear Hats Wisely
Just because there isn’t a dress code, doesn’t mean you should wear a hat for every occasion.
There are some times when wearing a hat just isn’t the best choice for your outfit.
Personally, my campus was super chill and people came to class in all sorts of outfits.
For the most part, everyone was pretty casual. Usually wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt, leggings, sweatpants, or jeans.
Some even came in pajamas (especially for those 8 am classes where people overslept and didn’t have time to get dressed.)
The exception to this “chill rule” was during class presentations.
As a student, this is the time when you should put your best foot forward.
I’m talking about wearing at least a business casual outfit!
Among students, it’s generally common knowledge that if you’re presenting you should look more put together than usual.
So leave the hat at home on those days.
3. Have Fun!
Lastly, have fun with your outfits!
College is such a great time for self-expression and truly finding your identity so if a hat fits your vibe, go rock it!
Trust me when you graduate and enter the boring after-college world, you’ll wish you had more fun wearing whatever you want in your college years.
