Finals Week Motivation for When You Feel Like Giving Up

If you’re reading this, you’re probably exhausted. Maybe you’re behind. Maybe you’ve been staring at the same notes for three days and your brain has officially checked out.

Maybe you’ve cried a little. Maybe a lot.

That’s okay. You’re allowed to just be here.

This post isn’t going to tell you to just push through or that you’ve got this or that success is just around the corner.

 You’ve seen enough of that.

What it’s going to do is help you actually get through the rest of this week, realistically, without burning yourself completely out.

What You’re Feeling Is Normal

Feeling burnt out during finals week is completely normal. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you or that you’re not cut out for this.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…Finals are A LOT. A week of multiple exams, studying different content for each class, being burnt out from the whole semester, and these are what’s standing in between you and a well-earned break.

…Yeah, it makes sense that you’re tired.

So let’s get you through the rest of this week.

Step 1: Stop and Actually Rest (For Real This Time)

Not “take a five minute break and check Instagram.” Actually stop.

If you’ve been going for hours and nothing is sticking, continuing to sit at your desk is not studying.

It’s just suffering. Your brain cannot retain information when it’s this depleted and forcing it to try is mostly a waste of time.

Give yourself a real break. Take a walk. Eat something. Lie down for 20 minutes. Step outside.

Do something that has nothing to do with school for a defined amount of time and then come back.

Step 2: Remind Yourself Why You’re Doing This

Real talk for a second. Why are you doing this?

Like actually… why does this semester matter to you?

It doesn’t have to be deep.

Maybe you really need to pass this class. Maybe you’re trying to keep your scholarship. Maybe you just really want to hit submit on that last final and go home and sleep for 14 hours straight.

Whatever it is,  hold onto that. That’s your reason to keep going.

Step 3: Get Clear on What’s Left

When you’re overwhelmed, everything starts to feel like it’s piling up at once. and your brain starts treating all of it like it’s equally urgent and due tomorrow.

It’s not. So let’s slow down for a second.

Grab a piece of paper and write down exactly what you have left to do.

Every exam, when it is, and what you still need to cover for each one. Only include just what’s left.  Not everything you wish you had done differently or studied sooner (we’re not doing that to ourselves right now).

Most of the time when you see it written down, it’s way more manageable than it felt in your head. And now you have something real to focus on instead of just a giant cloud of stress.

Step 4: Do the Next Small Thing

Now that you have your list and you know your why, let’s focus on doing one thing on your list.

You wanna know why? Because accomplishing something feels good and you need a win right now.

Pick the easiest thing on your list for the next exam coming up and just do that one thing. And I mean easy. It could be as simple as opening your notebook for that class. That counts.

Then go back to your list and cross it off. Let that feeling warm your body a little. You did something and it matters.

Then pick the next thing and repeat.

You don’t have to figure out the rest of the week right now. You just have to do the next thing. And then the next one after that. That’s genuinely how you get through finals week when you feel like you can’t.

Before You Go

The good news is that finals week has an end date. And you’re closer to it than you think!

You took a break. You got clear on what’s left. You have a reason to keep going and a plan to follow.

Now go do the next thing on your list.
